PUNTA DEL ESTE — Pablo Aimar, 35, said yesterday that he is anxious to play many matches in his return to River but he is cautious and added that he will sign with the club only if he can deal with the physical demand to help his teammates and enjoy the matches.

“My dream is to play here again. I have done everything possible for reaching that achievement. I underwent two surgeries. I will do my best to be fit for that challenge and I am confident I will succeed. My personal aim is to enjoy playing without feeling pain. I am really excited,” Aimar said yesterday at the press conference held at Solanas complex in the Uruguayan seaside resort Punta del Este.

The only self-imposed condition for Aimar to reach a deal with River was to be in form to play at a good level. He also cleared up that coach Marcelo Gallardo will decide to field him or not.

Aimar also talked about the good performances that Leonardo Pisculichi — the first-choice player in his post and his roommate during the preseason — had in the last six-month term.

“I saw him fantastic, a phenomenon,” he said and added that he will accept River’s proposal only if he is fit enough for playing and training alongside his teammates and that he wants to be an “example” like other older players were for him in his career’s beginning.

Aimar deludes himself with the Libertadores Cup but he asked “not to think of the day after tomorrow before than tomorrow.”

The Córdoba-born player worked in the sand to follow the recovery of the surgery he underwent in the right heel a few months ago.

Aimar has been trying to be in form since Gallardo asked him to join the team.

Aimar started his career with River and played 82 times between 1996 and 2000. He has earned 52 international caps and was an important member of Argentina’s 2002 and 2006 World Cup squads.

He has also had a successful club career, first with River Plate, and later Spanish top-tier teams Valencia, Real Zaragoza and Portugal’s Benfica.

Aimar has not played for a while because of an injury to his right heel, and has been without a club since April, when he finished his contract with Johor Football Club of Malaysia.
